Urgent Help Needed Due to Covid
God continues to bless the Bwindi ECO Children’s School with many blessings and gifts to his people there. The past 12 to 15 months have been a real challenge, with new issues developing almost daily. Currently, the Uganda Government has once again closed all schools in the country because of an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases. This time, however, COVID cases are being seen in Bwindi. On June 6, it was announced that all schools would be closed for 42 days effective June 7. In addition, there has been a ban on travel for all residents traveling out their local parish or district. As a result, the flow of food into the country and throughout the country has been disrupted and the price of food has doubled. People are unable to obtain food and with most jobs being lost, they are unable to afford any food. As a result, we are asking for your help for the families and orphans and vulnerable children at the school.
We believe the problem is twofold: 1) an immediate need for food and 2) a long term need to help the school and its families provide more food for themselves. BUCC has purchased two plots of land for the school and they have started to grow their own food stuffs, however, this is not enough to solve the immediate problems brought about by COVID-19.
As a result, we have set up three donation priorities that we believe will help:
- We sponsored an Agricultural Sustainable Workshop in January 2021, with assistance from Helping Hands International, where 76 families were taught how to grow their own food. We have since learned that about 50 of these families were unable to buy the seeds and tools necessary to put the program into practice. So for $55.00, you can purchase a kit consisting of seeds, fertilizer, insecticides and basic tools to allow these people to grow their own food stuffs.
- Expand the current chicken, goat and mushroom projects by 200 laying hens, 100 broilers, and 32 milk goats (including two males) and add to the mushroom project. Goats are $50.00 each, chickens are $15.00 for two. A contribution of $20.00 will allow a fund to be developed for $250.00 to increase the supply of mushrooms (fresh water is now available for both projects as the water well has a tap for this property)
- We have learned that 15 families of orphans and vulnerable children are headed by an older child (there is no adult available for supervision of these children) and an additional 7 families are headed by an elderly woman, either a Mother or Grandmother. The total number of people in these families, which are attached to the school, is about 125 people. A food supplement for one family of 6 people for one month is $100.00. Any additional funds can be used for children gathering at the orphanage every day at breakfast and lunch asking for food, since they are hungry.
Please be in prayer for these people daily and also prayerfully consider how you can best help with the current and future needs. Please be generous. 100% of your donation will be sent to Bwindi.
